Jan. 22, 2019 Short-term Modification to Total Dissolved Gas Criteria

Upcoming Comment Period

Ecology will open a public comment period on Jan. 29 to consider a short-term modification to our total dissolved gas criteria (WAC 173-201A) for areas on the lower Snake and Columbia rivers. We will have a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and draft short-term modification documents for comment. The comment period will be from Jan. 29 to Feb 28, 2019.

Save the date for our upcoming hearings and comment period

We are planning two public hearings that will begin with a short presentation, followed by questions and answers. The hearing portion will begin shortly after the questions and answers are finished. During the hearing, you may give oral testimony and written comments. Written comments will receive the same consideration as oral testimony.

Why are we doing this?

We are acting on requests from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, and a coalition of non-governmental organizations to adjust our total dissolved gas criteria for dams that spill water to aid fish passage. Providing a short-term adjustment could help facilitate increased spill at dams during portions of the day to help juvenile salmonids migrating to the ocean. The purpose of the EIS is to evaluate the risks of adjusting the total dissolved gas criteria to allow more spill in the Columbia and Snake rivers.
