BMP Case Study: Grattix Box at Port of Vancouver

Building a Grattix Box with the Port of Vancouver

During our latest stormwater discussion, we hosted Mark Tousher, Senior Environmental Specialist with the Port of Vancouver, to share an easy to build media filtration system known as the Grattix Box. The Grattix Box is a “rain garden in a box” that filters zinc and copper from metal roof runoff using simple materials and an easy-to-build design.

Watch the Presentation:

In this recorded presentation, Mark walks through the Port’s experience developing, testing, and refining the Grattix Box. He explains how it started as a small experiment and became a proven approach for reducing metals in roof runoff. The video includes lessons learned, maintenance tips, and results from over a decade of use.

Build your own!

The Port of Vancouver developed a Grattix Box Construction Guide that walks through every step of building your own. The guide covers the materials used and includes photos of every step in the assembly process.
