Destined for Bioretention: From Concept to Community Impact

Stormwater Awareness Week 2025 – October 6–11

Helping kick off Stormwater Awareness Week 2025, join us for a dynamic online presentation on Monday, October 6, that explores the flexibility of bioretention and its power to transform stormwater challenges into community assets. Learn from real-world case studies that explore Tacoma’s award-winning E 40th Street project, the regional treatment facility at UW Tacoma, and Silva Cells on Pacific Avenue. You’ll hear directly from Scott Treber & Shauna Hansen with the City of Tacoma about how bioretention and pervious pavements are designed, monitored, and adapted over time. This presentation offers valuable lessons on decision-making, pitfalls to avoid, and the long-term ownership considerations that ensure these projects succeed.

Then, participants will have the unique opportunity to see these concepts come to life during an in-person tour of Tacoma’s projects on Wednesday, October 8. This guided experience will show how interdisciplinary teams tailored bioretention and pervious pavement solutions to meet the needs of complex communities. While the tour will provide an on-the-ground look at these forward-thinking facilities, the October 6 online presentation will give you the critical background and technical context that will make the site visit far more rewarding.

**Registration is required for the October 8 tour**, and space is limited. We strongly encourage attendees to join the October 6 online presentation first to get the most out of the in-person experience.

Don’t miss this chance to connect stormwater science with real-world impact. Register today and be part of building more resilient, community-centered solutions for Washington’s waterways.
