Summary: Climate resilience in WW Agenda, stormwater facility sizing, strategic approaches to stormwater management for the future.
AGENDA
Stormwater Climate Resilience in Western Washington
October 2, 2019, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
Redmond City Hall Council Chambers
Purpose of the Meeting:
Advance conversations on Climate Resiliency among SW professions in the Puget Sound region
Examine preliminary work on stormwater system design considerations in light of projected
future climate (rainfall) scenarios.
Target Audience: Municipal NPDES Permit Coordinators in the Puget Sound Area, WSDOT, and Ecology
8:30 – 9:00
Coffee/informal networking
9:00-9:10
Welcome and Introductions
City of Redmond
9:10 – 9:35

Guillaume Mauger, UW Climate Impacts Group
(20 min presentation + 5 min for Q&A)
9:35 – 10:00
Climate Change Impacts on Stormwater Facility Sizing
Jeff Burkey, King County
(20 min presentation + 5 min for Q&A)
10:00 – 10:30 Extended Q&A/Discussion
10:30-10:45

10:45 –11:40 Situational Assessment: What We’ll Need and What Currently Being Done
Presenters and their topics:
Peter Holte, City of Redmond, Scope of Activities Needed
James Rufo Hill, Seattle Public Utility, Operational Adaptations
Workshop Participants, Share Actions Your Organization is Taking?
11:40 – 12:25 Discussion: Developing Strategic Approaches to Stormwater Management in a
Changing Climate
Lara Whitely Binder, King County
Jessica Engel, King County
Peter Holte, City of Redmond
Jeff Burkey, King County
After a brief presentation, participants will have the opportunity to participate in small
group discussions focused on the following questions:
1. How do we maximize existing asset performance given the uncertainties around
resizing for climate change?
2. How do we build more capacity and support for addressing climate change
impacts on stormwater management?
3. What are the technical assessment and science needs that we should be
prioritizing?
4. How much do you plan for now versus later given the tradeoffs between costs
and uncertainty (and what actions would you pursue?)?
12:25-12:30
Meeting Close
City of Redmond
Thanks to: Ecology for providing funds to support investigations into this topic, and to King County and
UW Climates Impact Group, the Washington Stormwater Center, and an ad hoc group of NPDES
Coordinators for planning this workshop.
