Jan. 9, 2012 TOTE Installs Rain Gardens to Successfully Reduce Stormwater Pollution

Last April, Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) installed rain gardens at their Tacoma site to reduce the high levels of dissolved metals entering Commencement Bay. The company had not been meeting their goals for stormwater standards and was faced with being out of compliance with Washington Department of Ecology. The rain gardens were installed at minimal cost and filter about 250,000 gallons of water a year. The company’s levels are now well within range and they have been able to reduce the number of stormwater outfalls from four to three.
