Stormwater Awareness Week 2025 – October 6–11
Join us during Stormwater Awareness Week for a hands-on look at one of the most effective tools for managing stormwater: permeable pavers. On October 7th from noon to 1:30 PM, Mutual Materials will host a live permeable paver cleaning demonstration, showing best practices for restoring performance when moss, sediment, and debris clog the system. Participants will see how permeable interlocking concrete pavement (PICP) is maintained, including a real-time power washing demonstration to bring infiltration rates back to full capacity. Lunch provided ahead of the demonstration by Mutual Materials!
What Are Permeable Pavers?
Permeable pavers are designed to let rainwater filter through joints between the pavers into underlying aggregate layers, where pollutants are captured, runoff is reduced, and water quality improves. Unlike traditional pavement, they reduce downstream flooding and erosion while supporting both pedestrian and heavy vehicle traffic. Over time, however, the voids between the pavers can become clogged—making occasional maintenance essential.
During the event, attendees will learn how permeable pavers compare with other stormwater-friendly surfaces, like porous pavers and pervious pavement, and gain practical knowledge on why maintenance matters.
Event Schedule Highlights
- 11:45 AM – Lunch service available, provided by Mutual Materials.
- 12:00 PM – Introductions from the demonstration team (Mutual Materials, Appian Construction, and CMHA experts).
- 12:10 PM – System overview: installation background, performance considerations, and best practices for cleaning.
- 12:15 PM – Demonstration begins: see infiltration rates before and after cleaning, and explore techniques for restoring joint performance.
- 12:30 PM – Power wash demonstration with aggregate installation.
- 12:45 PM – Q&A session with the team.
This demonstration is a unique opportunity to learn how these systems are cared for in real-world settings—knowledge that can help guide your own stormwater management projects, whether for municipalities, industrial sites, or community spaces.
