Recently, our own Dr. Jen McIntyre was interviewed by Forbes magazine for her work detailing the effects on coho salmon of 6PPD-quinone, the toxic chemical formed when a common rubber preservative used in the manufacturing of tires reacts with ozone in the atmosphere. Coho populations in the most densely urbanized parts of their range are threatened with extinction. While the effects on human health have yet to be fully uncovered the impact on aquatic ecosystems is evident and tire dust represents a very real threat to the health of our waterbodies.
